Ok, the Judo Podcast has officially moved, so if you have bookmarked this page, please change it to www.thejudopodcast.com We will be recording another podcast soon with one of Gene's students who is studying in Japan for the summer. The Judo Podcast is now free, and if you didn't subscribe to the newsletter, or haven't cancelled your account, please do so now. To cancel your subscription, log into your paypal account and cancel. Of course, if you would like to continue to donate, we welcome you to do so, and would also like to thank everyone who supported this project thus far! The video will be making its way to www.judothrowdown.com, which will be another free site for all, and will feature video from the past and future competitions, clinics and instruction.

Creative Judo Teaching is a new book from Ken Webber and Malcolm Collins.

In this podcast they discuss the book and the underlying principles it is built upon. Covering many topics from the difference about coachinga nd teaching, about teaching in a club rather than teaching Judo in an educational context.

Ken and Malcolm are involved with British Schools Judo, previously the British Schools Judo Association, which is thepart of the BJA involved with schools Judo.

Creative Judo Teaching, covers a great range of topics and involves sections on the aspects and responsibilities of a Judo coach. On class planning, on incorporating Judo appropriately into the National Curriculum.

Episode 17, just released for members, features Scott Moore from Denver Judo. Scott has an impressive history in visual impaired competition, as well as sighted competition. His wins include gold medals from the 1998 World Games in Madrid, Spain, the 1998 All Japan Championships in Tokyo, Japan, and the 2000 Paralympics in Sydney, Australia. This episode was recorded live at the 2007 Nationals, where his wife, Heidi Moore won Nationals, along with the Pan Am and World team spot. Scott discusses his experience, blind competition and instruction.

Referee Podcast from The European Judo Podcast

Lance Wicks, from the European Judo Podcast, and Mike interviewed referee Martin Bregman last week on refereeing. Martin has refereed at the World Championships, the Olympics, and numerous other national and international competitions. Claire Hargrave, from New Zealand was also scheduled but was unable to attend due to scheduling. The podcast covers the diffferent levels of refereeing, the new dynamic edge rule, and other interesting stuff. Be sure to check it out for free here. Gene and I will also be offering another podcast soon featuring a few other referees coming soon.

2007 Judo Sr. National Coverage

Gene and Mike were in Miami, FL all weekend for the 2007 Sr. Nationals. We got allot accomplished including a interview with Blind Paralympic athlete Scott Moore, who has had great success in sighted and visually impaired judo competitions around the world. That interview, along with an interview recorded last week with Paul Nogaki on "Starting your own Dojo", should be available to members soon! Added today is a free online gallery of over 160 photos from the 2007 Nationals competition. This week we will be adding a large amount of video highlights of the competition for our members, the most that we have recorded from any competition to date!

The games are held every other year and have been known to have over 8,000 competitors from around the world. Released for members in January, this podcast is now available for public consumption! We meet with Greg DiFranza and Brian Picklo, who both won gold medals in the 2005 World Police and Fire Games. Also on the show was Travis Serna, another police officer from Oklahoma City, and Brazilian JuJitsu and Judo competitor. The topic was Judo for law enforcement, and how it correlates well with the use of force continuum, and the valuable lessons learned from Judo durin "panic" situations.

Workout With Rhadi Ferguson- The At Home Workout

According to Rhadi, he can get you in great shape with NO SPACE, NO TIME, and NO EQUIPMENT with his video "Working Out With Rhadi: The At-home Workout"

With complex schedules being pulled between work, family, and everything else, it would be nice to find such a workout. But, the problem with the past was, nothing seemed to ever live up to its claims. I have to say with this video, Rhadi hit the mark. The video quality itself would probably not score high on most peoples lists, but you ever heard not to judge a book by its cover? Well, in this case, after the workout, you would definitely know what I am talking about. This is a core strength workout that can be completed in minimal time, I am talking about 10 minutes your first time through. Don't think that is long enough for a good hard workout? Well, think again...we have been using this workout for a few weeks now in our judo classes, and the claims are true...no space, no time and no equipment! This workout can easily be incorporated to club warmups, at home, even on the road if you travel with work like myself. Now, if I can just get THROUGH the entire workout, maybe I will write more...for now, just do yourself a favor and visit Rhadi.com. If you are looking for his initial claims, then look no further...

Judo Tube Video drills

Gene has added a video in the members section on judo tube uchikomi's. Gene shows how simple it can be by using a bicycle intertube rather than buying a judo tube. Without adding any to the structure, Gene is able to perform the drills using an existing pipe running down the wall of his dojo, Ssal Shin Jo Judo www.ssjjudo.com The video includes practice examples including hane goshi, seoi nage and several other throws, as well as general excercises.

Released on Nov 1st for the members section, Mike and Gene met with Serge Boussiou from Mayo Quanchi Judo in Providence, RI. and discussed the Ocean State International Competition. Serge talks about running and hosting tournaments and the process of putting together a tournament of this size. A few names were dropped of the competitors who attended, which was an impressive list of many of the top judoka in todays judo. Serge tries to play hookie from work as he eats a hotdog for a late breakfast, but just can't escape the cellphone. Gene finds stardom on the USA Judo website, and Serge tells about some "crack a lackin" ippons!

We at The Judo Podcast want to wish everyone a Happy New Year, and wish you the best health and judo training success. For me, the New Year is a time when I can focus on new warmups, drills and workouts to bring a spark to my own judo and personal health goals. Over the Holiday, we had a Kid's Christmas Camp, featuring instruction from Hiram "Tonka" Cruz from Jacksonville, Florida. He brought some great warmups and drills which we are sharing with you now in the members section. Again, Happy New Year and best of luck for 2007!

What can you do to improve your judo by yourself?

Lots of new judoka often ask what they can do to enhance thier judo at home, or without a partner. Overall conditioning excercises are always a plus, but one great workout specifically for judo is a judo band. Here is a link to how to build one at your home, or you can simply use a tree or post of any kind. The judo band allows you to practice some of the throws, and really concentrates on your pull, which is often a major issue that lacks in performance. Besides helping your kuzushi, it is an awesome conditioning and strength workout too! Check the members section for some upcoming videos on working out with a band.

Mike and Gene meet with Neil Ohlenkamp, owner of www.judoinfo.com and author of new book, "Judo Unleashed". Neil talks about his new book "Judo Unleashed" and tell some behind the scene stories about the book. Neil, Rokyudan, talks about his start in judo, and the progression over time, including his involvement with the paralympics, and national coach for blind judo. Neil talks about the early days of judoinfo, which started in 1995 and now has over 250,000 visitors monthly. Mike, Gene and Neil talk briefly about the structure of websites, bandwidth and the associated costs. All agree that support is needed to keep websites like this available. Neil talks about his squeaky hip, especially when he throws harai goshi, since his hip replacement 2 years ago. Mike forgets to pack his underwear for Athens, Greece. Future episode on judo for the visually impaired is announced and will include Adam Blackburn from Salt Lake City USA Stars Judo and may also include another visit from Neil Ohlenkamp!

Stephen's desire is to pass along judo later as an instructor, Kai's is to develop the best technique, and Katelyn, well, she wants to kick butt and compete in the tournament with the rings...her goal is to be in the 2012 Olympics in London, and something tells me she will be there! This is a great podcast you won't want to miss, for all ages!
